Winnipeg – Palace Theatre
Located at 501 Selkirk Avenue in the North End, this former theatre building was designed by local architect Max Blankstein. Trained in Odessa, Russia, Blankstein emigrated to Canada in 1904.
The Palace Theatre was constructed in 1912 by owner Jacob Miles, whose family was one of the biggest movie theatre operators in Manitoba. A popular spot for live vaudeville performances, it was later converted into a movie theatre, with a balcony added in 1927 that increased the theatre’s capacity to 800 people.
The Palace closed in 1964 and after the stage, balcony, and all interior walls were removed, the building was used successively as a department store, auction house, furniture warehouse, and bargain store.
In 1997, it was sold to a group hoping to use it for live community theatre. The building has been vacant since at least 2002.
