Winnipeg – Lindsay Building

228 Notre Dame Avenue, Winnipeg, MB

There are many unusual aspects to the Lindsay Building.

It’s purpose, upon it’s 1912 construction, was fairly standard for the time. Rental office space provided easy profits to building owners like Frank Lindsay, who took advantage of the growing demand for rental space in Winnipeg’s business centre.

Where the Lindsay Building differs from its neighbouring office towers, though, is the building’s design. It sits on a trapezoidal lot at the intersection of three streets, and the building’s shape, too, is trapezoidal – with an intricate terracotta facade that covers the entirety of the structure. Typically, office towers in Winnipeg were constructed with steel-frame supports – here the Lindsay Building differs again, as reinforced concrete slabs were used instead.

The intricate terracotta work is also of particular note. Details small and large are found across the facade, from fleur-du-lys, sheaths of wheat and coats of arms. On the main floor, angels support banners that bear the building name. Medallions of green terracotta highlight the construction date of the building.

Today, after nearly a century serving as office and retail space, the upper levels are largely residential.
