Brandon – Peters Bungalow

264 8th Street, Brandon, MB

Following the First World War, newer housing styles began seeing a rise in popularity across North America. Among these styles was the bungalow, which has its roots in the Bengal region of South Asia though there have been many different takes on the bungalow across years and across countries. In Canada, and much of North America, a bungalow is generally a single-family home that is one storey high. As the style grew in popularity in the 1920s, companies such as Sears began producing pre-fab (or pre-cut) homes, which delivered all the pieces and plans you would need to construct your very own bungalow.

Brandon’s quaint Peters Bungalow at 264 8th Street was constructed in 1927. Predictably one-storey, the bungalow features a gable roof with dormers, brackets, and friezes. Atop the roof is a detailed chimney. The home’s entrance is recessed, hidden under a semi-enclosed porch supported columns.

This quiet family home was originally owned by doctor and surgeon Dr. William S. Peters, who lived in the bungalow for thirty years. A prominent man in Brandon, Peters worked out of the Crawford Block near Brandon’s business centre.

More recently, the home was adapted into a commercial hair salon.
